Midstate has completed the Mary Isaak
Center, a three story, 22,101 square foot shelter
for homeless adults. Designed by Kodama Diseño
Architects and Planners in conjunction with the owner,
COTS, The Committee on the Shelterless; this shelter
includes a dormitory, large kitchen, offices, meeting
rooms and space for medical treatment. The facility
has the capacity to sleep 134 individuals and offers
services such as emergency and transitional housing,
counseling and employment placement for individuals
to get back on their feet.
In addition to natural lighting and
skylights, the second floor includes a loft that gives
a view of the first floor, creating an open feel for
both floors. The dormitory has a dual use, serving
as a general purpose gathering room during the day,
and converting to a sleeping area at night. Notable
aesthetic features include an elevator shaft which
was integrated into the structure, a retro-plate polished
concrete floor and a unique suspension awning near
the front entrance.
