SAFEWAY
St. Helena, Sebastopol, San Rafael, CA
Midstate Construction is continuing its 50 year working
relationship with Safeway Inc.; recently contracting to
perform four-wall remodels in Sebastopol and San Rafael
and a new store in St. Helena.

St. Helena #2605

The St. Helena store was expanded from 20,000 to 31,000
square feet. Midstate started by constructing additional
square footage behind the existing store. Merchandise was
relocated to the newly constructed facility. When the new
addition was fully operational Midstate demolished the existing
store. The front portion of the store was then constructed
to complement the rear structure. This construction required
expertise and precise timing, as the project had to be performed
in phases to allow the existing store to remain open for
business. Interior finishes were all upgraded, including
new freezer and refrigerator boxes. The stonework on the
front of the store was crafted using stones from local vineyards.
Rough sawn Douglas fir timbers were used for the trellises
at both the entrances and over the Pedestrian Plaza, a seating
area located next to the store.

Sebastopol #0933

The Sebastopol store added 7,400 square feet to the store,
providing stockroom space and an enlarged sales floor area.
The interior upgrades include new flooring, larger freezer
and cooling boxes for merchandise, relocation of the bakery,
pharmacy, deli, meat and floral departments and a new banking
facility. The colorful Craftsman façade of the building
lends itself to the feeling of a quaint country market that's
within convenient walking distance to the bustling downtown
Sebastopol area.

San Rafael #0653

The San Rafael store added 2,700 square feet to the interior
of the store, giving an overall square footage of 28,000.
The focus of this remodel was to allow for more stockroom
space and a larger sales floor area. Like Sebastopol, the
interior renovations included relocation of the deli, bakery,
receiving department, floral, meats and produce areas. The
storefront entrance uses large windows to allow for more
natural lighting inside the store. The use of block and
new plaster work gives the perimeter of the store a very
clean line. Architectural wood beams were used to emphasize
the signature arched roof. Metal trellises with skylights
adorn the two entrances.
